The high temperatures are starting to wain, school shopping has started and everyone is trying to cram in the last bit of summer fun before its over. And nothing says summer fun more than live music, the smell of delicious food in the air, face painting, art and children’s laughter.
That is a small sample of what attendees will experience at Oasis Summer Nights each Thursday in August at the Oasis Community Garden, a program of the Junior League of Ogden located at 2445 Monroe Blvd. Oasis Summer Nights runs from 6 to 8 p.m., and during this time, you’re likely to find people playing Frisbee, live music and dancing in the courtyard, free yoga sessions, and local artists or entrepreneurs selling goods.
The Oasis Community Garden Project is an integral component in fulfilling Junior League of Ogden’s mission to improve the community by targeting issues of food equity through education and by creating a place where individuals can learn how to plant, grow, harvest and prepare healthy food.
The planning for the garden began in 2002. Since that time, a once derelict inner-city lot has been transformed into an urban oasis, with many community garden plots available for rent, two garden sheds, an educational learning pavilion, fruit trees, a dry stream bed, a seasonal restroom enclosure, a grassy lawn area, lighting and a paved pathway. All of these improvements have been made possible through generous financial and in-kind contributions from the community, including the Weber County Recreation, Arts, Museums & Parks program (RAMP).
Oasis Community Garden is a place for the community. The Junior League of Ogden encourages community members to bring a picnic, bubbles, hula-hoops, friends and family, and enjoy a bit more summer fun at Oasis Community Garden Summer Nights or one of the other popular community events planned over the next few months. Parking is available across the street from the garden, behind the 7 Eleven.
